The seven villages of the Amana Colonies were established in eastern Iowa beginning in 1855. The church was the most important building for this Christian communal group. Today the Amana Church Society continues with worship services offered in German and English in Middle Amana and Amana. The seven churches still can be found: Amana, West Amana, South Amana, East Amana, Homestead, High Amana and Middle Amana. The name “Amana” comes from the Bible, the Song of Solomon 4:8. It means “remain true” or “believe faithfully.” |
